Flat-Pack Furniture Assembly: A Before-You-Start Checklist
Prepare the space, instructions and parts before assembling flat-pack furniture. Know when to pause and ask for help rather than force a component.
Read the assembly instructions before opening every hardware bag. Ten minutes of preparation can make the job much easier to understand.
Before you start
- Confirm the model, selected variant and all expected cartons have arrived.
- Find the exact manual and read it through, including warnings and any required number of people.
- Check the parts and hardware against the supplied list without mixing different sets.
- Inspect for missing or damaged components. Contact the retailer before proceeding if something is wrong.
- Prepare the tools specified in the instructions; do not assume a power tool is appropriate.
- Protect the work surface and floor using a method suitable for their finishes.
- Allow the assembly space and handling help required by the product.
Keep the sequence intact
Follow the manual’s order, orientation diagrams and tightening instructions. Parts that look symmetrical may have different holes or edges. Check before fastening rather than forcing a connection.
Do not substitute guessed screws, drill extra holes or remove structural components to make a part fit. If the instructions or supplied parts appear inconsistent, pause and ask for support with the model reference and photographs.
Include installation in the job
Some furniture needs anchoring or another installation step before use. Appropriate fixings depend on the product and actual surface. The anchoring checklist explains the questions to resolve; it is not a replacement for the product instructions or qualified installation advice.
Keep children and pets away from loose hardware and the work area. Remove packaging and small parts safely once the checks are complete.
Before putting it into use
Carry out the final checks specified by the manufacturer. Confirm the furniture is in its intended position and any required installation is complete. Keep the instructions for maintenance and future moving.
