How to Read Furniture Dimensions, Variants and Carton Sizes

Read furniture dimensions correctly by separating overall size, usable space, selected variants and cartons. Check the measurements that affect your purchase.

A furniture listing may contain several correct sets of dimensions. The problem is using the wrong set for the question you are trying to answer.

Use assembled dimensions for the room, internal dimensions for storage or compatibility, and carton dimensions for delivery access. Keep the selected variant attached to every number.

Term What to establish
Width The side-to-side measurement and the product’s stated orientation.
Depth The front-to-back measurement, including any specified projection.
Height The relevant top point: overall height is different from seat or tabletop height.
Diameter The distance across a circular shape through its centre.
Internal dimensions Usable space inside a drawer, shelf, cabinet or compatible opening.
Extended or open dimensions The product with the relevant feature in use.
Carton dimensions The packaged item, which may be one of several cartons.

Check the order of the numbers

Do not assume every listing writes width, depth and height in the same order. Read the labels. If a diagram and text seem inconsistent, ask the retailer to clarify before ordering.

Convert units carefully. A measurement of 1200 mm is 120 cm, or 1.2 m. Keep one unit on your room sketch so a centimetre and millimetre figure do not accidentally get treated alike.

Keep variants separate

A range may offer different sizes, orientations, colours or pack quantities. Confirm the selected option, then read its specification and inclusions.

A photograph showing a larger variant is not evidence of the dimensions of the smaller one. A family name is also not enough to establish compatibility between components.

Room fit and delivery fit are two checks

Draw the full assembled footprint in the room, including relevant openings. Separately compare all cartons and handling requirements with the delivery route.

The delivery measuring guide covers doors and turns. For an occupied dining area, table size and chair space shows why the furniture outline is only part of the footprint.

Save one clear product note

Model and selected variant · quantity included · assembled dimensions · open dimensions · internal measurements needed · carton count and sizes · any unresolved question.

When comparing offers, use the complete-price method alongside these facts. A precise measurement is valuable only when you know what it measures.
