Outdoor Cushion Care: Cleaning, Drying and Storage
Check outdoor-cushion labels before cleaning or storage. Separate removable covers, filling care and exposure instructions for the actual product.
Read the care instructions for the cushion cover and the filling separately. A removable cover is not necessarily machine-washable, and an outdoor description does not mean the whole cushion can remain wet.

Before cleaning
Identify the model and find its care label or instructions. Check whether the cover can be removed, how it may be cleaned and how both cover and filling should be dried.
Do not choose a temperature, detergent or cleaning method from the fabric’s appearance. Avoid bleach, steam or pressure washing unless the manufacturer specifically permits the method for the relevant component.
After a spill or rain
Follow the supplied directions promptly. If the instructions are missing or unclear, ask the retailer before applying a cleaning product or soaking the cushion.
Dry the components as directed before enclosing them. IKEA’s outdoor-cushion guidance, for example, distinguishes product-specific cleaning instructions and complete drying before storage. Use your own cushion’s directions for the actual method.
Make storage part of the routine
Measure the cushions before buying a storage box. Include their thickness and the opening through which they must pass. Check the box’s stated suitability, ventilation and exposure limits rather than assuming any outdoor box keeps everything dry in all conditions.
Inspect stored cushions periodically. If moisture or a musty smell develops, investigate the cause rather than simply closing the lid again.
Ready to put away?
Cleaning method checked · cover and filling handled as directed · completely dry as required · suitable clean storage · no overcrowding or trapped wet items.
Use the cover measuring guide for furniture covers and the winter-storage checklist when packing the whole setting away.
If you are choosing a new setting, compare outdoor furniture with its care needs in view. The right cushions are ones whose comfort, appearance and maintenance fit the way you use the space.
