Prepare outdoor furniture for the period you will use it less, whether that is winter or another part of the year. The right routine follows the products and your local conditions, not a single calendar date for all Australian homes.
Clean, check, dry, store
- Read the instructions. Separate the frame, surface finish, cushion cover and filling requirements.
- Clean as directed. Use only the permitted methods and products. Deal with visible damage or loose components through the appropriate repair or support process.

- Fold or stack only if intended. Check the allowed arrangement and avoid putting loads on parts not designed to carry them.

- Inspect periodically. Check for moisture, movement or other problems rather than treating storage as a set-and-forget step.
Give stored furniture an address
Make a simple storage list: furniture position, dry cushion location, permitted removable parts and the matching manual. Label a parts bag with the actual piece it belongs to; “outdoor screws” is not much help several months later.
Keep regularly needed items accessible without dragging the furniture out. When it is time to use the setting again, work through the maker’s reassembly and inspection instructions before adding cushions and styling the table. The aim is an easy restart, not a puzzle made of unlabelled pieces.
Keep the small parts with the furniture
If the instructions allow any parts to be removed, label and store them with the relevant manual. Photograph the arrangement before taking it apart. Do not dismantle a mechanism simply to make the furniture fit into storage.
Put a reminder with the instructions to check the furniture before returning it to use. Follow the maker’s reassembly and maintenance directions rather than assuming it is ready because it looks clean.
