How to Measure Outdoor Furniture for Covers

Measure the furniture in the exact arrangement you intend to cover. A cover for one table is a different shape from a cover over that table with chairs around it.

1. Arrange the pieces. Fold, stack or tuck chairs only where the manufacturer permits that arrangement. Keep any parts that should be stored separately out of the measurement.
2. Measure maximum width. Include arms, handles or other projecting points.
3. Measure maximum depth. Include the farthest back and front points in the stored arrangement.
4. Measure height. Use the cover maker’s specified measuring method and note the tallest point.
5. Check the cover’s fit instructions. Compare the stated compatible dimensions, shape, hem position and any required allowance.
6. Check fastening and ventilation. Follow the cover’s intended use rather than improvising tight wrapping.

For a dining set

Chairs may project beyond the tabletop even when pushed in. Measure the group, including chair backs. If an umbrella is involved, follow the specific furniture and cover instructions; do not assume a central hole means every cover or umbrella arrangement is suitable.

For a lounge or modular setting

Confirm whether you are covering individual modules or an allowed grouped arrangement. Use the widest points and check the shape at corners. A large rectangle of fabric is not automatically a suitable fitted cover.

Do not force a cover over sharp projections or rely on it to secure furniture against wind. Follow the product’s exposure and storage directions.

Before covering
