Sit-Stand Desk Buying Guide: Range, Load and Room Fit

Compare sit-stand desks by height range, equipment load, stability information and cable clearance. Check the complete setup before ordering.

A sit-stand desk should work properly at both the positions you intend to use. Check its lowest and highest usable heights with the desktop included, not simply the frame’s advertised travel.

The moving feature adds questions about equipment, cables and the room around the desk. Work through those before comparing finishes or memory buttons.

Find your required range

Assess the seated and standing work positions using suitable workstation guidance. Your height alone is not a complete desk-setting formula. The chair, footwear, equipment and individual requirements affect the setup.

The workstation guide links to official advice. If your needs require an assessment, establish them before choosing a desk range.

Add up what the desk carries

Check how the manufacturer defines the load rating, including whether it covers moving loads and whether the desktop is included. Account for monitors, mounts, computer equipment and other items.

Do not infer capacity from the number of motors or the appearance of the legs. Confirm the actual rating, installation requirements and any restrictions on accessories.

Check the whole travel path

  • At the low position, will the desktop meet a drawer unit, chair arm or other object?
  • At the high position, could it contact a shelf, window fitting or wall-mounted equipment?
  • Are cables long enough without tension and routed away from moving parts?
  • Can the controls be reached without an awkward stretch?
  • Does the room allow safe access around the moving desk?

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for clearances and operation. A stated anti-collision feature is not a substitute for keeping the movement area clear, and its presence or behaviour must be verified for the model.

Use the extra function thoughtfully

A height-adjustable desk offers another working position; it does not make prolonged standing the goal. WorkSafe Queensland’s workstation guidance encourages changing posture and moving regularly, with the equipment adjusted for the position being used.

For cables, see keeping the desk and floor clear. For the top size, use the equipment-led desk measuring guide.

Choose the desk when its range, surface and operation suit your actual work. Features are useful when they make the change of position easy enough to become part of the routine.
