A Home Office with an A$500 Furniture Budget

Plan an A$500 desk-and-chair furniture budget around usable space and verified adjustments. Keep electronics and delivery costs separate.

Give your A0 two main jobs: a desk that holds your work and a chair that suits you. If your existing desk already works, you can put more towards the chair instead.

The two example budgets below cover furniture, delivery and a reserve; keep your computer and screen budget separate. Replace these planning amounts with actual quotes as you build your shortlist.

Allocation Starting from scratch Keeping a suitable desk
Desk A$180 A$0
Chair A$220 A$300
Needed storage or setup item A$0 A$80
Delivery allowance A$60 A$60
Reserve A$40 A$60
Total A$500 A$500

Keep what genuinely works

If your current desk has suitable surface and leg space, keeping it can free more of the budget for the chair or another actual need. Use the desk measuring guide to check it, rather than replacing it just to create a matching setup.

The chair checklist helps compare adjustment ranges and fit. A cheaper chair that does not suit the work is not made better value by leaving money for decoration.

What if the delivery quote changes the plan?

In the first example, A$180 for the desk and A$220 for the chair leaves A$100. If actual delivery is A$90, only A$10 remains; the A$40 reserve has not survived just because it is still written in your notes.

At that point, compare another suitable combination, keep a usable existing piece or adjust the total budget. Keep the fit requirements fixed while you change the shopping plan. Buying an unsuitable chair to make the arithmetic work is an expensive kind of saving.

Let the shortlist change the allocation

There may be no suitable item at a target amount. Change the plan rather than forcing a purchase to match the table. Keep an existing component longer, defer non-essential storage or revise the budget when necessary.

Check delivery to your address and confirm what assembly or accessories are included. Do not spend the reserve before you know the full total.

After the furniture is chosen, assess the whole workstation. The useful result is a suitable place to do your work, not simply two new pieces that add up neatly to A$500.
