Hanging Chairs and Hammocks: Space and Safety Before Style
Check hanging-chair and hammock space, approved supports and manufacturer instructions before buying. Do not assume a beam or tree is suitable.
Before choosing a hanging chair or hammock, establish whether the specific product can be installed and used appropriately in the intended place. A photograph of a chair hanging from a beam is not evidence that your beam, fittings or site are suitable.
Begin with the exact manual
Obtain the manufacturer’s instructions for the selected model. Check the intended support system, included parts, load and user limits, operating space, surface or fixing requirements and any restrictions on use.
Instructions are model-specific. For example, IKEA’s HAMNÖN advice includes separate requirements for use with a stand and warns against use before installation is complete. Those instructions cannot be transferred to a different chair or hammock.
A stand is still part of the system
Confirm the chair or hammock and stand are an approved combination. Check the stand’s complete footprint, assembly, surface requirements and the permitted movement around it.
Do not assume a stand of similar appearance has the same compatibility or capacity. Do not add improvised weights, alternative suspension parts or modifications to make an unsuitable combination work.
A building attachment needs proper assessment
If the product requires attachment to a structure, obtain appropriate qualified advice about the actual support and installation. This article does not provide drilling instructions, fixing sizes or a method for assessing structural capacity.
For rented or shared property, resolve the relevant permissions before installation. Never choose a fixing point simply because it is convenient or already has a hook.
Measure the operating area
Account for the full movement and access specified in the manual, not just the seat’s width. Keep the required area clear of walls, glass, other furniture and hazards.
Check the intended exposure, inspection and storage instructions. Do not treat a hanging chair as a child’s play swing or sleeping product unless the manufacturer explicitly establishes that intended use and its requirements.
Pause the purchase if these are unresolved
Missing model instructions · uncertain support or compatibility · insufficient operating space · unclear user or load limits · unapproved fixing location. Resolve the relevant question with the manufacturer or qualified installer first.
