Understanding upholstery and furniture care

Use the care instructions for the actual upholstery material. Texture names such as velvet or bouclé do not tell you how to clean it.

The best care routine is the one written for your actual furniture. A little preparation now makes the first spill less of a guessing game.

Read the material, not only the texture

Bouclé and velvet describe an appearance or fabric construction; they do not by themselves tell you fibre composition or the cleaning method. Check whether the upholstery is fabric, leather, a coated material or a blend, using the supplier’s wording.

A similar-looking finish can have a different care requirement. Keep the product’s label and instructions with your purchase details.

Removable does not always mean washable

A cover may unzip for manufacturing or servicing without being suitable for machine washing. Check the instructions before removing or washing it. Look for any temperature, drying or professional-cleaning requirements that apply to the specific fabric.

Plan for everyday use

Consider where the furniture will sit, how often it will be used and the likely spills. Compare the care information for the actual option you choose. Do not assume a fabric is stain-proof, pet-proof or fade-proof unless the supplier supports that claim and its conditions.

When something spills

Follow the product’s cleaning guidance and act promptly. Avoid soaking the upholstery or trying a strong cleaner based on a generic internet tip. If a recommended product requires a spot test, use an inconspicuous area as instructed. Ask for advice when the care method is unclear.

Outdoor upholstery is its own check

Confirm that both the furniture and cushions are intended for the planned outdoor exposure. Read the drying, storage and cleaning requirements; a water-resistant cover is not automatically suitable for being left wet or uncovered indefinitely.

Keep expectations clear

Good care helps you look after a purchase, but care instructions do not replace consumer guarantees. Contact us about a defect or an unexpected product issue rather than trying a repair that could make it worse.

Questions, answered.

Can I machine-wash a removable cushion cover?

Only if the instructions for that cover allow it.

Does a textured fabric tell me how durable it is?

No. Check the stated composition, intended use and any supported performance information for the exact product.
