Bedside Table Size Guide: Height, Width and Reach
Choose bedside tables using mattress height, room width and drawer access. Compare matching and mixed options that fit the space.
A bedside table is successful when you can reach it comfortably and put down the things you actually use. Its proportions need to work with the assembled bed, not just the headboard in a photograph.
Measure from the floor to your mattress top
Include the real mattress and any topper. Compare that height with the candidate table’s top, then test the reach from your normal position in bed. A surface near mattress height can be a useful starting point, but personal reach and the way you use it should decide.
For example, if your sleeping surface is 62 cm high, a 48 cm table and a 64 cm table will feel quite different beside it. These are invented measurements, not ideal heights. Mock up the surface safely with a stable object before ordering; do not balance an unstable stack beside the bed.
Width: leave room for the route, not just the table
Measure the space between the frame’s widest point and the wall or next piece of furniture. Allow for curtains, power points and access. If you use a storage bed, include its opening area too.
A wider bedside chest may replace a little clothing storage. It may also make the room harder to move through. In a small bedroom, test the complete layout before buying two identical pieces.
Depth: watch the drawer and the bed edge
A deep cabinet can project awkwardly into your route. A shallow one may fit the room but have less useful drawer space than its external dimensions suggest. Check the internal dimensions when you have a particular item to store.
Open a drawer in your plan and leave space to use it. Make sure it will not hit the bed frame or bedding. Consider whether the handles project beyond the listed cabinet depth.
