Australian Bed and Mattress Sizes: A Practical Guide

Compare Australian mattress sizes in centimetres and check the larger bed-frame footprint. Use a room-fit checklist before choosing a size.

A queen mattress and a queen bed frame are two different measurements. The mattress size describes the sleeping surface. The frame may add a headboard, padded sides, a footboard and several centimetres you did not allow for.

Use the size name to begin your search, then use the centimetres to make the decision. Australian manufacturers do not all publish precisely the same dimensions for every named size.

The Australian size names, compared

These are the dimensions published for the Australian Ecosa mattress range, shown as width × length. They are a useful reference, not a promise about every mattress sold under the same size name.

Size Reference dimensions The useful distinction
Single 92 × 188 cm The narrow, shorter option in this comparison.
Long single 92 × 203 cm More length without more width.
King single 107 × 203 cm Wider than a long single, with the same length.
Double 138 × 188 cm Wider but shorter than a king single.
Queen 153 × 203 cm A step up in both dimensions from this double.
King 183 × 203 cm 30 cm wider than this queen; no extra length.
Super king 203 × 203 cm The square option in this reference range.

Three measurements belong on your shortlist

  1. Mattress width and length. Compare these with the frame’s stated compatible mattress size and any internal dimensions provided.
  2. Mattress depth. This affects how much headboard remains visible, fitted-sheet depth and the total height of the sleeping surface.
  3. Frame’s overall width, length and height. These are the dimensions to draw on your bedroom plan.

Do not assume a mattress will fit a frame merely because both come from Australia, or because an overseas chart uses the word queen. Ask about compatibility if the listed measurements do not agree.

Will the larger bed improve the whole room?

A wider mattress can give you more sleeping space while leaving less room for the rest of the bedroom. Test the frame outline with removable tape suitable for your floor. Walk from the door to the wardrobe and around both sides. Open drawers and cupboard doors.

For a closer comparison, the queen-versus-king guide works through the space trade-off. If the frame itself is the next decision, use choosing a bed frame.

Save these five numbers

Mattress width, mattress length, mattress depth, bed-frame overall width and bed-frame overall length. Keep them in one phone note alongside a room sketch. Size names are convenient; these numbers prevent expensive misunderstandings.

Finally, check the delivery route and carton sizes. A frame that assembles in the bedroom may arrive in several boxes, while the mattress has its own packaging and handling requirements. The bedroom measuring checklist covers that last part of the job.
