Choosing a bed frame: sizes, bases and inclusions

Start with your mattress size, then compare the frame footprint, support and storage clearance.

The bed in the photograph may be exactly your style. The next step is making sure the mattress, room and included base all agree with it.

Start with the mattress fit

A size name is a starting point. Compare the mattress dimensions with the bed frame’s supported mattress size and internal space. Australian mattress guides commonly show queen at 153 × 203 cm and king at 183 × 203 cm, but the exact product specification remains the final check.

An imported model, unusual base or extra-thick mattress can introduce a mismatch. Check the stated mattress fit for the particular bed rather than assuming that a familiar name makes every frame interchangeable.

Measure the whole frame in the room

The overall width and length include the frame, upholstery and headboard. Mark that footprint on the floor, open nearby doors and drawers, and leave a workable route around the bed. Check headboard height against windows, switches and wall fittings.

Look at the support system

Read whether the product includes slats, a platform, a central support or other base components. Follow the mattress maker’s requirements for support and spacing; do not assume any frame suits any mattress. Ask for clarification if the listing leaves the base unclear.

Storage needs access

A drawer base needs room for drawers to open. A lift-up base needs space and safe access for its lifting mechanism. Check what the supplier says about operation, installation and the permitted mattress; storage capacity alone does not establish suitability.

What does the price include?

A bed frame may be sold without a mattress, bedside furniture or bedding. Check the inclusions and the number of packages. For delivery, use packaged dimensions as well as the assembled footprint. Keep assembly instructions and required safety information with the product.

Questions, answered.

Does a bed frame include a mattress?

Only when the product’s inclusions explicitly say so.

Is the mattress size the same as the outside size of the bed?

Usually the frame needs additional space. Check both measurements on the exact product.
