How to choose dining chairs for your table

Measure the table underneath, too

The tabletop height is only part of the fit. Measure from the floor to the underside of the table apron, then check the height of any chair arms. A chair can look right beside the table and still fail to tuck underneath.

Measure between the table legs where the chairs will sit. Pedestals, trestles and crossbars can change usable legroom, even when the tabletop is large.

Work out how many chairs actually fit

Use the chair’s overall width, not just its seat width. Mark the footprint of each chair along the table and leave enough room for people to sit and move comfortably. If the table extends, check both its everyday and extended layout.

For a useful test, place your existing chairs or tape outlines in the planned positions and sit at the table. This is more informative than choosing from a seat-count label alone.

Choose the material for daily life

Compare the actual frame and seat materials. A timber finish is not automatically solid timber, and a fabric name does not tell you its cleaning instructions. Upholstered seats add another care requirement; check the product guidance before choosing a light colour for everyday dining.

Check the price and the pack

Dining chairs are often sold individually or in sets. Compare the full purchasable amount beside the sale quantity. If you need six chairs and a product comes in sets of two, the purchase requires three sets. Check that the colour and model match across the whole order.

• Table height and underside clearance recorded.
• Chair width, depth, seat height and arm height checked.
• Room to pull each chair out and walk past tested.
• Complete chair quantity, materials and care instructions confirmed.
